Now Make It Funky Video Of the Week: Grace Jones

Okay people. Look. Uncle Fatlips can’t force good taste on anybody. I just don’t have that kind of power. Either you have it or you don’t.  For instance, to dig Grace Jones is to demonstrate remarkable breeding. You got good genes, child. You respond to high art without hesitation, current sensibilities or explanation. Your taste clearly transcends the babbletries of whatever is in at the moment. You add a whole new meaning to the word “class.” And your lovemaking skills are probably legendary. You’re charismatic, vaguely successful, a voracious reader, easily bored, and regularly purchase fresh corn tortillas and bakery goods for late night consumption. Your clothing choices are odd at best to the layman’s eye. Gym memberships are for fools. Yep, that’s us Grace Jones fans. That’s who we are.

Grace is comin’ to the Hollywood Bowl in July and performing with the LA Philharmonic. I am out of mind–I can’t wait! When it gets closer to the date I’ll write a longer post about it. She dropped a new album late last year HURRICANE. I haven’t heard it yet but I’m sure it’s Grace. Actually, I could’ve very well featured a video from the new album but—I came across this video set to SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM. It’s more tribute than music video but IT’S SO DAMN HOT. We can check out the new stuff some other time. Now make it funky Grace!

Haps ‘n Hangs Picks O’ The Week

Friday March 20

blowpop

bLOWpop! @ Fais Do Do

The New Ninjas bring it extra hard this time. Our regular menu of music, film and basement party vibe is spiced with a special screening of the critically acclaimed documentary of “This is the Life” by Ava DuVernay. This film captures the essence of a music scene that never really got it’s shine yet was the tea that todays most recognizable MC’s sipped from to garner their own successes. Through this film,  Ava pays homage and sets the record straight. Both she and Medusa along with a few other special quests will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A and DVD signing. And of course, the music will be live with Field Ninja J and Kim “Kizzie” Hill turning it out on the turntables. Read the rest of this entry »

94% Of Facebookers Just F*#@kin’ Cannot Stand The New Look

new-design-small

According to TechCrunch, a polling application on Facebook asked users if they liked the new design or not. The survey yielded over 800,000 responses–most of whom which responded with a HELL NO. I must admit I’ve seen quite a bit of resistance this time around in regards to Facebook’s most recent facelift. Lots of whining. Enough for me to update my profile with “shut the hell up.” To tell the truth, it doesn’t really bother me all that much. I get what Facebook is trying to do. It’s attempting to Twitterize the thing. Whateva. I love Twitter but it ain’t all that. No need to redesign a perfectly good interface for the sake of keepin’ up with the Joneses. Read the rest of this entry »

A-Rod’s Not Gay But You’re A Big Fat Oreo

arkiss

Anybody catch the latest on Alex A-ROID Rodriguez? Apparently A-ROID has this controversial photo spread of himself with the featured article ALEX RODRIGUEZ: CONFESSIONS OF A DAMNED YANKEE in the current issue of Details magazine (the one above of him gettin’ it on with himself is the pic that’s drawing the most ohhhs ‘n’ ahhhs). Uncle Fatlips doesn’t see the big deal. Okay, so he’s kissing his own reflection—he’s self-absorbed and a narcissist just like most celebrities. Where in this are we supposed to be shocked?  At least in a Freudian way he’s being honest about it.  Read the rest of this entry »
